We need to change how we use our eyes to ferret out the potential and recognize the great shots. Sometimes we go far afield looking for those amazing photos but very often there are some incredible opportunities right our - own doorstep and we just need to sees them differently.

 - One of the best zoom lenses in the world are your own feet:
  • Move closer to the subject

    •
  • Coming in close will have punch

    •
  • Moving further away and neatly framed probably won't

    •
  • Improve your composition by moving around.

    •
  • Look for strong lines and dramatic angles
Look for dramatic skies too -
  • These can be the main subject instead of just the background

    •
  • add a splash of color like a brightly colored flagpole, letterbox, corner of a building to accentuate your shot and add extra interest
Experiment with perspective
  • Go for a different point of view

    •
  • Look for a different perspective get down on the ground or shoot from higher up - don't take all your photos standing in the one place

    •
  • Getting down on the ground works well for buildings to make the ordinary objects look monolithic
Frame up shots compositionally
by taking them through a doorway, archway or window or frame by elements in nature - between trees, rocks or plants

 Shadows
  • Use shadows to create interesting photographs

    •
  • Make shadows part of the composition

    •
  • Use shadows to emphasize your photograph

    •
  • Use shadows creatively
Abstract Patterns One of my personal favorites !

 Look for abstract patterns to photograph and soon you will start to see them everywhere
  • Look for an array of shapes

    •
  • Look for repetition

    •
  • Look for patterns and lines

    •
  • Look for details of the objects rather than seeing the whole
Create abstract photographs from texture, line, form, color.

 Any subject can be a starting point, try, boats, trees, leaves, people, hats, branches, color, water, ripples, take a look at your world and see what you can spot !

 This photo below was taken during a felting session after noticing how the wool colors all went together and appeared like an abstract painting.

More Everyday Shots - A New Perspective

More shots from the ladder :)  Looking down on things sure can give you a new slant on things - check out what I spotted from above - I've walked past this golden mossy "sculpture" a stack of times but it looked different with the sunlight shining on it and the Bromeliad from above looked like a mini pond.  Ask Frogs - they love them !

Wonderful Moss Garden - Natures Own Abstract Art

What do you all think of this as natures very own handiwork ? This could almost have been duplicated in a tapestry or made into one of Kaffe Fassett's tapestrys or  knitted works of art or painted into a giant artwork don't you think ? This macro image was one of a very small clump of moss on a concrete step - just goes to show what can happen when you view things differently - we've probably all been just walking over these amazing shots and not giving them a second glance.  Try looking at everyday things like moss, slimy gutter pipes,  mould and rust through your macro lens and see what you can see. Taken again with my trusty Nikon Coolpix of course !   On its macro setting. You too can take awesome shots just seek and you will find :)
